Lend me some till Friday
A friend asks to borrow 20 till Friday so he can pay back a debt. To the same friend he is asking.
- ThemHey, help me out. Lend me 20 till Friday
- YouWhich Friday
- ThemThis one
- YouYou’ve owed me 20 since last Friday
- ThemExactly
- That’s why I’m asking. So I can pay you back
- pause 1.2 s
- YouSo you borrow 20 from me to give me back 20
- ThemYes. I keep my word
- YouAnd what do I get out of it
- ThemA clear conscience. Both of us
- YouSteve, this is some kind of scheme
- ThemIt’s not a scheme. It’s a credit history
- I’m building it with you
- pause 1.0 s
- YouFine. Sent
- ThemThanks, bro
- pause 1.5 s
- Paid you back
- YouYou sent me my own 20
- ThemDebt settled, don’t mention it
- YouAnd when do I get the new 20 back?
- ThemWhat new 20
- See you Friday!
Why it is funny
The friend’s logic is absurd but airtight on its own terms, and that is the whole laugh: he never tells a single lie. The last line sends the story back to its first message, and the reader knows next Friday will go exactly the same way.
How to make it yours
Change the amount and the day of the week freely, the logic will not suffer. Keep the friend unflappable to the very end: the moment he looks embarrassed, the scheme turns into an ordinary request for money.
