Why it is funny
The whole story runs on one fear: "we need to talk" with no explanation. Each confession is bigger than the last, the reader laughs before the answer arrives, and the answer turns out to be the most harmless one possible.
How to make it yours
Pick confessions that fit your characters, but make each one slightly more serious than the last and let the final one slip out almost by accident. A short reply at the end matters more than a long one: the fewer the words, the funnier.
