Scary chat stories at night
Night is not a setting but a clock. In these stories the time is a character of its own: the frightening thing has an exact minute, and you can count up to it alongside the character.
Time as a character
An exact minute does what no setting can: it turns reading into waiting. The reader sees 4:41 in the chat and already knows how much is left.
That is why night stories work best in real time. The character writes once a minute, the gaps between messages are real, and at some point a minute arrives carrying an answer that should not exist.
What a night story is made of
Four elements, and all of them are about repetition.
- Something that has already happened several times and will happen again tonight
- An exact time, said out loud in the opening lines
- A witness on the other end who asks for a message every minute
- A rule of the shift: do not answer, do not watch that camera, do not go in after one
- A one-line ending that arrives at exactly the named time
How to write your own
Name the time in the first five lines and never explain it again. After that simply keep the count: 4:41, 4:42, 4:43. Lines that short read fast and drive the rhythm towards the end.
The longest pause goes before the final minute. On video that is two seconds of silence, and those two seconds are the whole story.

For three weeks he has woken at exactly 4:44. His friend says that is not insomnia, something is waking him.

Why 4:44 or 3:15 rather than just "at night"
Because an exact time can be waited for. "At night" is background; 4:44 is a deadline, and the reader watches the clock with the character.
