Scary chat stories: ghost town
A ghost town differs from an abandoned house by scale. A house can be checked in an hour; a town cannot. While the character convinces themselves the place is empty, the town quietly proves otherwise.
A document with a date on it
The decisive evidence in this setting is always on paper. Today’s newspaper in a letterbox, a receipt dated a decade ago, a ticket with somebody else’s surname, a timetable with no such station on it.
Paper beats a ghost: a shadow can be blamed on tiredness, a date on a newspaper cannot. That is why these stories almost never show the inhabitants. Showing their traces is enough.
Infrastructure that still works
The second device: in a dead place, something keeps running perfectly well.
- Lights in windows and a radio in the yard where the grid was cut
- Fresh asphalt on a road that is not on any map
- A working barrier at the exit of a town closed thirty years ago
- A train that stops at a platform outside the timetable
- An order in the app for an address that does not exist
How to write your own
Your character needs an ordinary reason to be there: a delivery job, the way home, a trip with friends following an old map. An expedition in search of the uncanny costs you credibility straight away; a work shift does not.
Build the ending on a document rather than an encounter. An order date, a stranger’s surname on a ticket and a closed barrier do more than any description of who came out to meet them.

The town was closed in ninety one, yet the glass is intact and the curtains hang. The letterboxes hold today’s newspapers.

How does a ghost town differ from a village
A village has people and hands the character its rules. A ghost town has no rules and officially no people, so the frightening part is any evidence of presence.

A date cannot be blamed on tiredness or the dark. It turns a feeling into a fact, and the character can no longer talk themselves out of it.
