Scary chat stories: summer camp
At camp, children are counted out loud. Cabins, the flag line, a headcount before the hike and after it: the mechanism is already built into the daily routine, because a count can be run twice and give two different numbers.
Why camp is worse than home
You cannot leave a camp. Parents are in another town, the bus comes at the end of the session, and the adult in charge may turn out to be part of the problem. The character is locked in by a timetable rather than by walls.
Second: at camp the character is never alone, and that works against them. At home only they notice the strangeness. At camp twenty people notice it and carry on as if nothing has happened.
The mechanism: one too many
Almost every camp story grows from a single device. Something was counted, and the number came out higher than it should be.
- The count before and after: nine walked to the fire, ten walked back
- A cabin missing from the numbering that still gets a table laid for it
- Photographs from past summers with the same face in all of them
- A counselor whose name somebody else signs in the register
- The rule of the hike: hold the shoulder in front of you, and the last in line has nobody behind
How to write your own
Make your character the one writing home. A conversation with a parent or an older sibling gives a natural reason to spell everything out, so the reader never has to guess at the details.
Let the other side refuse to believe it at first. That is the fastest way to show something is wrong: if the person on the other end argues, there is something worth arguing about.

The counselor never showed up, yet someone signs the register for him. And he is in the photos of every past summer.
