Scary chat stories: school
School is frightening because the reader knows it by heart. The floor plan, the timetable, the class register, the bell at the same time every day: all of it is already in memory. Such a story needs no explaining, only one detail moved out of place.
Why school beats the abandoned house
An abandoned house can hold anything, which is why it holds nothing frightening. School is the opposite: everyone knows how many pupils are in the class, where the corridor leads and who should be standing at the duty desk. The fear arrives the second one of those numbers fails to add up.
So the strongest school stories are built on a document. A timetable, a register, a list of who has read the message: a document cannot be argued with, and it says something other than what the eyes see.
What makes a school story work
Five devices that show up in almost every strong story in this setting.
- A number the reader can check: pupils in the class, doors in the corridor, names in the read list
- An exact address: room 12, third floor, end of the corridor
- An adult who answers calmly, and frightens more than any shouting would
- A boarding school: it comes with a ready set of rules, and a rule exists to be broken
- An ending with no solution: the last line states a fact and stops there
How to write your own
Start from a detail the reader can check against their own school: a room number, the time of the bell, the size of the class. Spend the first five lines on an ordinary conversation, so the frightening part arrives in a familiar chat rather than on a prepared stage.
You need a pause twice: once before the turn and once at the end. The shorter the closing lines, the harder they land.
Room 4B
The timetable lists a room the floor does not have. The corridor ends in a wall, and the door opened anyway.

- Where are you? Class started ten minutes ago
- I cannot find the room
- The timetable says 4B, the floor only has 4A and 4C
- Third floor, end of the corridor

The Magpie boarding school
The boarding school has one rule: if they knock three times, do not open. The real rule turned out to be different.
