The boarding school has one rule: if they knock three times, do not open. The real rule turned out to be different.

How it works

The three-knock rule is stated in the opening lines, and after that the reader counts along with her. The ending does not break the rule, it goes around it: the frightening thing arrives by a route the rule never covered.
