How it works
The three-knock rule is stated in the opening lines, and after that the reader counts along with her. The ending does not break the rule, it goes around it: the frightening thing arrives by a route the rule never covered.
How to make it yours
State the rule early and casually, next to lights-out and handing in phones, or the viewer will not start counting along with Kate. The boarding school can turn into a sanatorium, a hospital ward or a hostel, and three knocks into any house rule with a number in it. Send the count as separate messages and hold the pause before the question about the third knock: it is the last second the viewer still trusts the rule. Before you write the ending, list what your rule does not forbid, and let the threat come from there.
