Never take her change
There is a new cashier at the all-night shop and nobody takes their change. The rule is simple: take it from her hand and you owe.

How it works
The rule is phrased so that politeness is enough to break it. Forty in change becomes forty days, and by then nothing can be given back.
How to make it yours
The amount has to be small and exact, because the same number later becomes the deadline: forty in change, forty days. If you change one, change both. Keep the awkwardness as his motive, since it is politeness that makes the character look like the viewer. The all-night shop can be a market stall, a night bus conductor or a station ticket desk. Hold the ending to two short lines: he gave it back, she would not take it.
